Don’t Get Burned when buying fireproof safe….

Below is a great article on cheap fireproof safes.  Long after the savings of cheap quality and cheap workmanship…..the disaster of your stuff will wear on…..

Fires can destroy lives, home and all your most valuable possessions. So it’s important to protect them. But what you may think is “safe” could be anything but! 7’s Sorboni Banerjee puts portable safes to the fire test so you “Don’t Get Burned.”

It happened in a flash… from sunshine to thunderclouds.  Before the family knew it, lightening struck their house.  A fierce fire ignited.

Mike Saraceno, fire victim
“It burnt basically all of upstairs and through the roof.”

The Saraceno family lost a lot. But the things they’d put in that safe were safe.

Mike Saraceno, fire victim
“I would have lost all that stuff.”

But 7News found that not all safes are the same when it comes to protecting your valuables in a fire. We chose three different styles and put them to the test.

The first safe is fire retardant, which means it’s resistant to catching fire. It sells for about twenty dollars. The second safe is labeled fireproof. That means it should never catch fire. This safe cost 26 dollars. And our third safe advertises it’s both fireproof and waterproof.. It’s our most expensive, at over 40 dollars.

We’re putting the same exact things in each of the safes; money, pictures inside an airtight container, DVDs, important documents, and then locking them up.

With the help of the Springfield Fire Department, we place the safes in a specially designed room and light a fire.

The room is about 1500 degrees and we have our safes on the floor though so it should be a bit cooler.

Sorboni Banerjee, 7News
“In a real house it would be even worse?”

Captain Mike Richard, Springfield Fire Department
“Yes, it would be definitely worse.”

About ten minutes later, firefighters douse the flames.

The first safe, the fire retardant one, looks like it held up ok on the outside. But inside, the contents tell a different story.

Sorboni Banerjee, 7News
“Everything is really, really wet.”

The second safe, the fireproof one shows signs of melting.

Sorboni Banerjee, 7News
“This one is a little less damp, important documents, pictures, money is good, DVDs and other papers are pretty soggy, but not burnt.”

The third safe, which is supposed to protect valuables from fire and water, melted shut. But it’s what’s inside that matters.

Sorboni Banerjee, 7News
“Everything in the big black safe is completely dry.”

Fire experts say for maximum protection, the best bet is a fireproof and waterproof safe.

Captain Mike Richard, Springfield Fire Department
“The water can do as much damage as fire can.”

And it’s important where you put your safe.

Captain Mike Richard, Springfield Fire Department
“The best place to put any valuables is as close to the floor as possible as long as they’re waterproof.”

For the Saraceno’s, their safe proved to be a saving grace.

Captain Mike Richard, Springfield Fire Department
“It’s a very minimal expense to give you a little piece of mind.”

And now they encourage other families to get the proper protection so you “Don’t Get Burned.”

Cobalt Safe SB-05c Fireproof Safe with Burglary protection.

The SB-05c from Cobalt Safe. Fireproof Safe. Burglary Safe.  One of the largest in this section! Cobalt Safes model SB-05c Fireproof Safe with Burglary Safe.  Has a lifetime fire warrenty and a 5 year warrenty against manufactures defects in labor and materials.  This is an extremely good warrenty in that most manufactures will cover similar but Cobalt Safes goes the extra mile and sends a locksmith to your location to repair.  Most manufactures are also only 1 year in coverage.

First take a look at the door, you will see that it is open. There are two major parts,  an outer door and then a bolt assembly behind it.  This gives it a solid 5 inch thick door on the  Cobalt Safe SB-05c.   Take into consideration that when  the average thief breaking into the average home.  He is coming into the house with empty hands and wants to leave with them full.  Chances of him bringing tools such as a  crowbar or sledge hammers are not the norm.  If he does find the safe he will most likely be too unprepared to even beat on it and will quickly move to everything else we leave available in our homes that is easy to pocket and easy to pawn.  Such as our laptops, tvs, dvrs and even my son’s Nintendo! (God forbid that gets taken)

Now for something hypathetical. Lets say you left the a crow bar and sledge hammer next to it and a small sticky note that says “beat me” on the safe.  The SB-05c fireproof safe is going to hold up.  The outer steel wall, which is an extreme thickness of about 1/8 inch steel is reinforced by a cement based fireproof wall with another steel wall on the interior.  This makes for excellant strength against common tools.

The 5 inch thick door is also too thick to get a crow bar down deep enough to actually gain enough purchase to even begin to start using a crow bar on the door.  So in my opinion the SB-05c Fire Safe is one of the best buys on the market today.

Combine this with a 2 hour fireproof  and a center bolt down (so the safe can’t picked up and carried away) for a sturdy little fortress of protection.

I also like the size.  Though it may be too large for most home situations it does offer good room to grow into.  The last thing most of want to do is purchase two safes.  I often advise to purchase 1 during your life.  But make it something you can grow into because this safe is designed to last a lifetime.  See more details at Cobalt Safes SB-05c

It’s time to buy a Safe.

The importance of having a Safe is growing on a daily basis.  With the loss of employment and faith in our financial institutions.  Crime and financial problems are on the increase this year.  Though it may not be showing up in the statistics yet, I think it will be glaring at us in a year from now.  Many of us have something or other that is valuable at our home or office. The safety and security of these valuable things is very important. These items can be anything like files, jewelery, certificates, property papers, cash and gold. It is very important to save them properly because if these things get lost once, they often cannot be replaced.

Of course, one of the best ways to keep these things safe and secure is having a security safe. There are many places from where you can purchase a safe. Before you go and purchase a safe, make sure what it is exactly you want to store inside them. (I get a lot of folks that need to double check the size of their stuff before they make a purchase) There are many types of safes that are available for selection. Some of them are fire resistant safes, fireproof safes, waterproof safes, burglar proof safes etc.

But before you run to Walmart and  purchase any old Safe, do not forget to get professional advice as it can help you choose products that can are best suited to your requirements. Safes that are presently manufactured are specially designed keeping certain needs of people in mind. A basic safe is meant to guard your precious things but may not provide complete protection from burglars. Also it might not be able to protect your documents and files from fire.

Safes are usually tested under various conditions to ensure proper safety. All the safes that are available come in different shapes and sizes. Their cost varies according to their size and features.  Don’t just buy something to say “I gotta a safe!”  There are many times that I advise people to hold off purchasing a safe until they can afford to purchase the proper model for their security needs.  For a great selection check out this site to purchase a SAFE

Fireproof Your Possessions

fireproof home safe

I can’t imagine anything worse than losing my home to a fire. I once had a friend whose family home burnt down due to an unexpected electrical fire. They lost everything, including family photos and mementos. It was so sad; I can remember my friend crying everyday at school.

Though I feel bad for that friend, I am glad I learned to protect myself against house fires when I was young. I invested in a fireproof home safe in order to guard all of my most important possessions. Even if my home burns down I will still have my favorite photos and important documents.

Cobalt Safe SB-03c Fireproof Safes with Burglary Protection

First, sorry about the quality of the picture.  The above pic is actually a picture of the SB-02C.  Which is identical to the SB-03c but the SB-03c is taller.

Which safe is right for me?

The protection of our valuables and goods is a normal function of everyday life. As to what degree of security is what often crosses our minds.  We can get concerned about our valuables like jewelery, gold and cash which we may like to keep at home. We have the need to protect them from robbery, fire, accidents and many unforeseen mishaps.

The need for a secure place to keep shtuff emerged out of all these concerns.

Safes have gained a lot in popularity and are widely used at shops, offices and homes. Safes are broadly classified into three main types as mentioned below.

1. Burglary Safes– this type of safe offers protection against theft. Burglary safes are made up of hard solid metal walls and provided with heavy doors, resistant to cutting, drilling and prying. This type of strong material gives protection against any attempt to break in to the safes. However Burglary safes are normally not adequately fire resistant.

2. Fireproof Safes they are usually made of thin double metal walls which are filled with fire resistant insulating material which makes it unique from other safes and very effective in protecting valuables from fire. Since they are specifically designed to protect valuables against fire, they offer the minimum level of security from theft and other risks.

3. Fire and Burglary Safes– they are effective in providing protection both against fire and theft and have multi purpose use. They are designed like a burglary safe which have secondary walls containing fire resistant insulating material.

Seek expert advise.  Start at your local locksmith but don’t stop there. See a great selection of Safes here.

Cobalt Safes SB-02c Fire Safe and Burglary Safe

Cobalt Safes model SB-02c Fire Safe /Burglary Safe.  Comes with a lifetime fire warrenty plus a 5 year warrenty against manufactures defects in labor and materials.  This is a very good warrenty in that most manufactures will cover similar but Cobalt Safes goes the extra mile and sends a locksmith to your location to repair.

Lets start at the door of the safe. There is an outer door and then a bolt assembly behind it.  This makes for a hefty 5 inch thick door on the  SB-02c.   When we examine the average thief breaking into the average home.  He is coming into the house with empty hands and wants to leave with them full.  Chances of him bringing a crow bar or sledge hammer are slim to none.  If he does find the safe he will most likely be too unprepared to even beat on it and will quickly move to everything else we leave available in our homes that is easy to pocket and easy to pawn.

Now for something hypathetical. Lets say you left the a crow bar and sledge hammer next to it and a small sticky note that says “beat me” on the safe.  The SB-02c is going to hold up.

So in my opinion the SB-02c is one of the best buys on the market today.

Combine this with a 2 hour fireproof  and a center bolt down (so the safe can’t be picked up and carried off) and its looking even better to me.

But wait, it gets better! The lock is a Sargent & Greenleaf group II dial lock.  Made in the state of Kentucky by real American hands.  The design and quality of these locks last for 100 years (warrenty is only like 5 but they are very well built).  Includes an extra sensative “glass relocker” on the safe to keep out the intelligent thief that may show up with better tools than a crow bar and hammers.

Last I want to point out the hinges.  Notice they are of a monsterous design.  That is because these are ball bearing hinges just like you see in bank vaults.  These keep the door from sagging after decades of use.

SB-01c Fireproof Safe

The SB-01c Fire Safe /Burglary Safe. Is made by Cobalt Safes.  Comes with a 5 year warrenty plus a lifetime warrenty for fire.  Though the picture is not the best here you should still be able to see what I’m going to point out to you.

First look at the door. There is an outer section and then a bolt assembly behind it.  This makes the SB-01c door about 5 inches thick overall.  When we examine the average thief breaking into the average home.  He is coming into the house with empty hands and wants to leave with them full.  Chances of him bringing a crow bar or sledge hammer are slim to none.  If he does find the safe he will most likely be too unprepared to even beat on it and will quickly move to everything else we leave available in our homes to steal.

But lets say you left the family crow bar and sledge hammer next to it and a small sticky note that says “beat me” on the safe.  The SB-01c is going to hold up like a champ.  The outer steel wall is reinforced by a cement based fireproof wall with another steel wall on the interior.  This makes for excellant strength.Â

The 5 inch thick door is also too thick to get a crow bar down deep enough to actually gain enough purchase to even begin to start using a crow bar on the door.  So in my opinion the SB-01c is one of the best buys on the market today.

Toss in a 2 hour fireproofing with a center bolt down (so the safe can’t be picked up and carried off) and its looking even better to me.

I honestly feel that this safe, as well as the rest of the SB line, is built to pass along to the grandkids in a few decades from now.  Take a closer look for more details or to purchase at SB-01c.
